Noel Gallagher On David Holmes, Bruce Springsteen And More

In the shops now, the Hot Press Christmas Special has the reborn King of Rock n’ Roll, Noel Gallagher, gazing moodily from its front-cover.

The far-reaching, funny as fuck interview inside starts with Noel telling us about how David Holmes ended up producing his Irish chart-topping new album, Who Built The Moon?

“I met him through Primal Scream. We were in my dressing room at this festival me and Gillespie’s mob were doing in Jersey. I didn’t recognise David, who was hanging out with ‘em, but as soon as he introduced himself I was like, ‘Fuck, I’ve got all your records.’ I love his music and his vibe, so when I thought I needed a producer for Chasing Yesterday, I gave him a call. I played him the demos – he was sat literally where you are now – and Holmer said, ‘They sound finished to me… but if you ever want to make a different type of record, come to Belfast.’ So, I did.”

Needless to say, there are A-List celebrity stories aplenty with Bruce Springsteen making a prominent early appearance.

“Six of us were in this restaurant in Fuerteventura,” he reminisces fondly. “One of those happened to be Jade Jagger who’s a mate of ours. After taking a phone call, she said, ‘That was my godfather; he’s just arrived in by boat and wants to know if he can bring a friend of his to lunch?’ We asked, ‘Who’s your godfather?’ She went, ‘Calvin Klein’. ‘Who’s his friend?’ ‘Bruce Springsteen’. I was like, ‘Wow’, and 20 minutes later there Bruce was. Fucking hell, he’s a dude!’”

By the time he finishes with our man Stuart Clark, Bono, Skepta, Paul Weller, Elton John, Kasabian, the Stone Roses, Manchester City, Brexit, Irish passports, Lou Reed, Neil Lennon, the London bombings, voodoo shrines, Damon Albarn, the Oasis documentary, Liam and middle-age contentment have all been dealt with in unique Noely G fashion.

“On a scale of one to ten, how happy am I?” Noel reflects. “A very smug, self-satisfied 9 ½, thank you for asking. Things are great at home, City are top of the table and I’ve made the record I’ve wanted to make for the past ten years.”

Noel Gallagher On Manchester City, David Silva, Pep Guardiola, Gary Neville, Jose Mourinho And More

Below are a number of quotes from Noel Gallagher on Super Sunday yesterday.

On record-breaking City...

"We did it. We got the record. It was a tough game. When it was 1-1, I didn't know how it was going to pan out. But we were brilliant. You didn't want to lose that record here - I've been here when they play 'glory, glory Man Utd' and not let you out of the stadium. You could get battered here but today we stood up to it. They never stop playing. There's no long balls. It's going to be a great night in Manchester tonight - I don't think I'll be going home."

On David Silva...

"Dave will go down as the best player we ever had, although the longer Kevin De Bruyne stays here, he'll get close. He's the best player I've ever seen play for City. The only thing Pep would change would be that he's not three years younger. There was a moment when City kept the ball by the corner flag for a few minutes and we were saying that the old United team, somebody would have taken those players out - but United were accepting that the game had gone."

On Pep Guardiola...

"When the new owners took over, he was the guy they wanted and it's all coming to fruition now. When he arrived, the club asked me to do an interview with him for City TV and we've kept in touch. He's a dude. There's not many people in football who actually like talking about football - he would gladly talk to you about what's going on. He does exactly what he says on the tin. Long may it continue."

On sitting next to Gary Neville...

"It's great to be sat next to a football legend [turns to Graeme Souness] - and Gary Neville."

On United fans...

"It's payback time - Gary [Neville] has lauded it up at ours many times down the years. It's a pleasure to be sat beside him. Respect to the United fans who clapped Pep Guardiola off - they know they've seen something special today."

On Jose Mourinho's post-match interview...

"The hypocrisy of the man is staggering."

Some Quotes From Noel Gallagher From Sky Sports 'Super Sunday'

Some of Noel Gallagher's quotes from the Sky Sport's Manchester derby Super Sunday.

Speaking before kick-off, he said: “I don’t like derby days, too nervous.

At the start of the show

“I think my fans would rather go to bed and wake up and have a draw and move on but it’s great to be here sat beside a football legend – and Gary Neville.”

On Manchester City winning the title.

“We could win today and lose to Spurs next week.

“When we started the season and hammering teams but recently we have dug in and we have never had that before. City used to be brilliant or lose.

Most teams now come to us and put 10 behind the ball.”

On Manchester United “You fear them in a derby. But win lose or draw we leave top. I’ll take a 6-0 now.

“The players have confidence, this is the best I have ever seen city play, they had a swagger when we murdered Watford, who were fourth. And the last three games.”

At half time with the score 1-1 “Yeah (I’m slightly disappointed), If we go in 1-0 up it’s a different game second half."

“But it’s been fascinating watching this fella here having a mental breakdown up until the goal. If I knew when I’m watching from home that this is what he’s like when he’s watching Manchester United, it’s going to make it all the more enjoyable for me this season I think. He was having a bad day up until the goal, he was having a bad day.”

On Manchester City goalscorer Silva and Kevin De Bruyne.

On Silva “Always, he’s the main man,” .

On De Bruyne “When you’ve got him and De Bruyne backing him up, they’re difficult to get the ball off of.”

Noel Gallagher on Jose Mourinho's comments that Manchester United should have had a penalty after Herrera got booked for diving.

“This is why people don’t like him, the hypocrisy of that man is staggering."

Jose Mourinho On Noel Gallagher's Appearance On Soccer Sunday

Jose Mourinho has said that Noel Gallagher's appearance as a panelist on Sky Sports' coverage of the Manchester derby is like him assuming a role as a judge on the Eurovision song contest.

Gallagher will join regular pundits Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher at Old Trafford tommorow to offer his views on one of the most eagerly anticipated derby games in many years.

When asked about Gallagher’s inclusion on the Sky panel, Mourinho smiled and offered up this cheeky answer.

"Noel is a big Man City fan, that's not a problem at all," stated Mourinho.

"I think if someone invite me to be a pundit on the Eurovision Song Contest I wouldn't go. I wouldn't risk myself. If Noel wants to do that, brave man."

Pep Guardiola On Noel Gallagher, Manchester And More

Taken from an interview with Gary Neville and Pep Guardiola read/watch the full article here.

From the passionate fans to the culture in Manchester, Guardiola spoke highly of the city, and revealed which member of Oasis he messages on a regular basis.

"Even last season it was not good in terms of results, but people here were so nice. Here the culture to respect this sport is fantastic. Everybody speaks about that," Guardiola said.

"The city is alive, in terms of the theatre, the restaurants, the museums, the shows, it's every week. And then there's concerts and concerts. It's nice to live this way because in Catalonia it's completely different.

Neville then asked Guardiola about music in Manchester, to which Guardiola replied: "Of course Oasis. Noel Gallagher - I think I can say we are friends, so we text a lot. I met him two or three times, I went with my family to the last concert here at the Arena, so it's good - with a new band.

"He was in one of the best rock groups in the whole of history.

And when Neville notified Guardiola that Noel would be part of Sky Sports' coverage at Old Trafford, the City boss said: "Oh yeah? That's good, I didn't know. He told me he was going to Old Trafford but I didn't know it was there [with Sky]. Please, take care of him."

Listen To Noel Gallagher's Interview With talkSPORT

Some might say Manchester City have found a brighter day.

Noel Gallagher certainly thinks so, with the rock 'n' roll star saying Pep Guardiola has City playing the greatest football he's ever seen.

As a die-hard fan, the former Oasis man did not hold back on the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast about his unwavering love for the Sky Blues’ boss.

He said: “He’s just like one of the lads. He’s a dude, man, he’s a proper dude.

“I literally go into that ground when I go and watch that team and think this is the greatest thing I’ve ever seen in my entire life.”

Gallagher is dipping his toe into football punditry on Sunday, swapping the guitar for the Sky Sports sofa at Old Trafford.

And he is absolutely dreading the game, expecting Jose Mourinho to field a team of assassins against Pep’s twinkle-toed stars.

He added: “Fellaini will be going out given strict instructions to kill either one of Silva or De Bruyne. Or both.

“I don’t like derby day, I’ve never enjoyed it. It’s too stressful.

“Genuine football supporters will want to get the derby out of the way.

“Wake up, call it a draw, and move on.”
